I would like to say something to the town that I have called home - TopicsExpress

I would like to say something to the town that I have called home for the last 10 years... I love this town... it is a great place to live... all the things I need or want are within a 5 to 10 minute drive... I miss my Popeyes, i hope it comes back someday.. but what i want to say is this... In 2009, Speeding was responsible for 33,808 fatalities in the US... I drive these roads everyday... I always... always obey the speed limit... I dont even go 5 over like everyone seems to think is ok because the cops wont give you a ticket for it.. Stopping distance is 40 feet at 20 mph. most people in this town do at least 45 on Lund to the Tremont exit. the stopping distance at 45 mph on a dry road is roughly 150 feet and roughly 250 feet at 45 mph on a wet road. As you can see it is critically important that you drive the speed limit... its there for a reason.. a group of people whos sole job is to make speed limits sit down and factor in the entire equation with all the variables including area (near housing), curves of the road, the bank and angle of the road and the roads condition in less than ideal conditions... are you really going to say that you are smarter than people whos sole job is to come up with the safe speed limit? A few months ago, I was driving down by the Green Store (most people know where it is)... i saw a little girl that had adventured her way out of the house after her dad forgot to lock the door when he left.. Her mom was still sleeping and was letting her play by herself... I stopped and got out of my car and was going to take her back to the house belonging to the driveway where she had come out of onto the road... a car comes barreling around the corner of Sidney and South St. they had to be doing at least 45 mph around the corner... If i had not been in that right place at the right time the child would have been killed... as it stands i had to rush in front of the car to swoop her up and get her out of the way almost getting myself killed in the process... did the car even slow down? no... they just kept on driving... and if you think im lying about this you can ask her mother... who was frantically in tears when i rang her doorbell on her door wide open house... i am not sharing this story for any praise... im sharing it for example... this town has a serious speed problem that needs to be corrected... and if it doesnt get corrected by the citizens we are going to be seeing an influx of police traffic patrols... i personally have nothing against the police but I would rather we just stop speeding... Another issue is tailgating... do you actually think that tailgating is a good idea? the person in front of you is not going to drive faster if you are 2 feet off of their bumber... personally if you tailgate me i will drive slower... i dont care that you want to speed... i dont care if your late... If you are late, you are late.. (not to mention that the rear-ender is the sole responsible party in an accident) speeding is only going to make your day worse when you get pulled over for a fat ticket.. or you die in a car accident because you are not Dale Ernhart... bad example i suppose... but the sentiment is just as valid... I am not ranting and raving about this.. so im posting it here as a concerned citizen... if you think that a speed limit is not what it should be, whether higher or lower, you should go to a city council meeting and bring it up... dont just flaunt the law... its there for a reason.. and all youre doing by breaking that law is endangering all of the other people on the road... I have doubt that the stretch from Lund and Bethel to Lund and Sidney should be 40 to 45 mph, but im not going to speed on that road because i think that... Thank you for listening (well.. reading...) and please consider what i have to say... getting up 30 minutes earlier everyday so that you dont have to speed could save the life of a 3 year old little girl... Its our town. Our community. Lets keep it safe by being better drivers.
