I would like to share this with everyone who can take a couple of minutes to read it: Almost a week ago I decided to go on the street and collect stranger’s stories in St. Louis. After a bad experience I had when I got here, I decided that I was not gonna be some other tourist in the U.S. I copied this Idea from an article I read a long time ago. I always wanted to do this back home, but never had enough courage to do it, but with hard times comes the ability, decision and courage to create; to be a better version of yourself; to transform pain into strength, and as I heard to a wise man say: “that is what makes life interesting and makes you a pioneer soul”. I believe in the importance of changing one’s perspective – I’ve changed mine while being in the U.S.- and create awareness of our own reality and the one surrounding us. Sharing with others is a brave decision, but mostly, is a powerful tool; It has the power to change, to create, to heal, to give hope, to learn and to teach. Throughout these days I’ve met many strangers who shared their stories with me, by writing or talking about their lives. I’m getting to know another side of American society, as I always wanted to understand what’s behind the stereotypes people creates to different races and cultures, based on a closed minded perspective; and I’m getting to know what the “Real America” is about, explained by its own people. I would like to take this project to a next level by sharing it with people in Bolivia, Peru, and other countries in Southamerica. To compare experiences and at the end, understand that no matter where we are, what race or country, we all have one thing in common: humanity. For me, it all starts with empathy. If you never had it, if you think you’ve lost it, or if you have plenty of it and have been hurt because of that, I invite you to see the videos, read the letters and share your story. Thanks for your time. Eugenia Robles.
