I would like to take this opportunity to shine a light on all the positive happenings at Yale Public Schools. The school year doesn’t begin in August; it begins as soon as the previous year ends. The teachers and students have been working all summer to make the 2014-15 school year a great one. Our young men have been in the weight room at 6:30 A.M. putting in the sweat and effort it takes to bring pride to their programs. Our volleyball ladies have been putting in hours of hard work in the gym to ensure their fans a season of great success. Cheerleaders have been getting in shape, spending time each week perfecting their routines so they may lead the crowd with enthusiasm. Our FFA students have spent their summer attending various leadership camps as they continue on their paths of service and leadership. The BETA club members have been volunteering their time at our elementary, assisting the teachers in painting classrooms and hallways. The list goes on; these are just a few of the behind the scenes efforts of the Yale youth. Many of our teachers have attended professional development workshops throughout the summer months. These are training opportunities that teachers are not paid to attend. They attend because they want to be the best teachers possible for our young students. Our teachers want to learn and ensure the success of every student they encounter. We have many new teachers on our staff this coming year. Let us continue to welcome these new employees into the Yale community and show them what a supportive community they have chosen to be a part of. We have already had many of our teachers working in their classrooms, meeting with new and returning teachers, and making plans for the fresh school year. For example, the elementary staff has repainted and redecorated the hallways laying the groundwork for their cowboy theme. Working alongside their student volunteers and co-workers, they have transformed their building into a bright, engaging environment which will stimulate learning. This year, the elementary is asking for a supply fee of $25 in lieu of a supply list. Students use more than just pencils, paper, crayons, and markers during the school year. Teachers incorporate many hands-on learning activities to stimulate young minds. This includes using shaving cream to practice phonics and spelling; expo markers to write on desks; clean up wipes to clean the desks; foam letters for letter recognition, forming words, and learning numbers; play dough for making shapes, letters, and 3D objects; cookie cutters to spell words; Oreos to learn moon phases; poster board for presentations; and balloons, newspapers, flour, glue, paintbrushes and paint to create papier-mâché globes. The Pre-K and kindergarten classes have sensory tables (donated last year) which have rotating manipulatives: sand, rocks, rice, beans, squash, leaves, artificial leaves, pumpkins, apples, etc. The supply fee is a one-time per year fee. If parents have already purchased some supply items, feel free to bring those. The supply fee is not meant to burden anyone. Children will not be left out of activities due to a financial issue. The supply fee is meant to allow teachers flexibility in purchasing supplies for student projects. We understand that one-size does not fit all. We realize this is a new system for Yale Public Schools, but we feel it will be a positive change for meeting our students’ needs. If you continue to have questions about this policy, please call or email Mrs. Locke directly: [email protected]. I appreciate the hard work everyone is putting forth to get the new year started. Sincerely, Dale Bledsoe, Superintendent [email protected]
