I would like to talk about a newspaper article. In this article a 15-year old gamer was sentenced to 25 years to life in federal prison for swatting. I found this article on different websites online, because I thought that must have been an April fouls joke. You can find the article on nationalreport.ne. My opinion on this case is that it is ethically wrong to send a minor into jail/prison for life. My believe system comes from another country and the values, ethics are sometimes not the same. In psychology I learned that the brain from a child or teenager is not fully developed until they are in their twenties. Furthermore looking at Erick Erickson’s developmental stages which Social workers use to evaluate children’s development, it clearly says: “Teens need to develop a sense of self and personal identity. Success leads to an ability to stay true to you, while failure leads to role confusion and a weak sense of self.” Now just using this statement from Erick Erickson, what do you think that will happens with the 15 year old in jail? Will that boost his self-esteem; will he be able to develop a sense of self? Furthermore, we can also look at children, teenagers growing up in foster homes vs at home. My question to you , will those children overall have a better start in life and a better start in society when they were loved and protected at home or is this not important anymore. You might argue that he did something really dangerous. Yes, but could we not implement a system that will help him and at the same time leave him with his parents that he is not missing out on the key component- his emotional development needs. Is a 15 year olds mental development really so advanced that he did that crime with a conscious mind and did he have the capability to really know what results that “prank” can bring? I don’t believe that. I believe that children younger than 18 should not held responsible and send to jail for 25 years or more. I believe that the parents should be responsible for their kid’s doing to a certain degree. It is the parent’s job to teach children ethical values. I could go further. The schools have our children 35 hours a week, 140 hours a month (plus minus holidays) and 1400 hours a year (calculation for 10 month/year). The teachers are also the kid’s caregivers and educators. I believe implementing ethics into the daily lesson plan will help children to be more educated and with group work children could educate each other on right and wrong. Let me ask you, if that child who committed the crime did not learn any ethical values at home or limited in school, why should he held responsible for his actions?
