I would like to thank all the people who came to Nicks wake and funeral. Thanks for all the wonderful memories you shared and all the meals and treats the neighbours brought. So many loved this piece I wrote for his service they asked me to share it. A Mother’s Reflection Although I could never get through standing up in front of you today to tell you all the things I want to say, I thought it was important that you hear the voice of a mother. I thank Patti for doing this for me. As many of you know Nick was a severe lefty, but he never complained about this right handed world he lived in. One morning I watched him chasing cheerios around a bowl of milk and I asked him what he was doing. He replied, Im trying to use my right hand to make it stronger so that I can use scissors better, and the can opener! I can tell you it was painful to watch him chase the last few cheerios around that bowl of milk. Next time you pour a bowl of cereal, think of Nick and try using your left hand. Nick loved to sleep, although he was always up in the morning for school, he could sleep in a vehicle like no other! Hes had a lot of practice, he started out when he was about 2, going all over the US with his Dad in a transport. He would watch movies and sit up in the passenger seat, and sleep. Nick would go for 3-4 days and if you asked him, when it was time for his Dad to go back to work hed go again. Nicholas was a rider, a really good horseback rider. Although he had short legs, he had incredible balance and loved to jump! Nicholas felt if you couldnt jump big stuff why bother jumping at all. I spent countless hours in a riding ring with him, trailering him to lessons and shows. He had a great horse named Slim who he wanted to do eventing with. We had just met Sarah Logan who had never evented and was game for anything. So, that summer Sarah would trailer Old Red over to practice with Nick. They jumped some incredible heights including barrels standing upright! One day Nick came into the arena and he watched Katlyn Oakes trying to get her horse to do dressage. After a few minutes he told Katlyn he used to do that (it had been about 5 years since he rode) Katlyn in disbelief told him to get on and give it a try. It took Nick about 2 minutes and he had that horse looking fantastic. Katlyn said, and I quote he showed me up so bad! That made Nick feel so good, and I was so proud! Nick played baseball and soccer, have you ever seen Nick run? That didnt matter, he tried hard, and loved to play. When we moved to Perth Nicholas was in grade 6. The kids asked him what country was he from. Nick asked them why? Well they thought he had such an accent, you wouldnt believe the countries they thought he was from. Nicholas did have lots of speech therapy as a wee lad. I do recall some of you, to this day asking him to say 4 just to hear the way he would say it. Nick was really good at math, it came easy to him. Hed help you too if you had trouble with your homework, but he would only explain once. He couldnt fathom why anybody didnt get it the first time the teacher taught it, so explaining it to you once at home was all you got, just ask Curtis. Nicholas and Curtis like to spend time out on the ski doo when they were little. Although Curtis was the younger boy, he was the driver. Curtis loved to drive, and Nicholas liked to be driven around! Even by his 5 year old brother. One day while they were driving around the field at their nana and grandpas farm, Curtis couldnt quite get that old skidoo turned and they drove right into the fence! They were ok, they just came back to ask for a little help to get it turned around. As they got older Nick wanted to be the driver of the car, have you ever driven with Nick? Curtis was your better bet but he almost always gave in to Nick and let him drive. Nick loved his sister. When we told Nicholas that I was pregnant and we would be having another baby he was excited! He was 4 years old when we told him. He told us that it would be a girl! He would have a baby sister and her name would be Rosie. I tried to explain to him that I didnt know if the baby would be a boy or a girl. He never skipped a beat, he just carried on telling everyone that he was having a baby sister and her name was Rosie. This went on for 6 months, and the baby we were about to have (if it was a girl) was to be named Mackayla Kathleen. I just couldnt name the child Rosie... so in a compromise, we changed her name to Mackayla Rose Leeworthy, just for Nicholas. He loved her from the moment he saw her, until the moment he died. Nicholas, “Ill love you forever, Ill like you for always, as long as Im living my baby youll be.” That is a quote from a Robert Munsch book that made both of us cry the first time we read it together, and every time after. Love Mom, until we meet again. PS Please give Grandpa Featherston a hug.
