I would not typically post anything to my timeline with a photo as graphically disturbing as this one. In fact, when individuals do post photos of: the abused animal etc. etc. I cringe and say: do I really need to see this? We all, after all, universally oppose animal cruelty and seeing the terrible aftermath does not in my opinion do anything to further that cause. This disturbing photo is something quite different, and in my opinion something that NEEDS TO BE SEEN. There is a disgusting, terrible and real anti-vaccination movement out there, and the promoters of that movement need to be called out. There is no debate to be had on the subject, VACCINES SAVE LIVES AND HAVE WORKED TO ERADICATE DISEASE. Futhermore, EVERY SINGLE STUDY SUPPOSEDLY LINKING VACCINES TO AUTISM HAS BEEN DEBUNKED. Unless you have extensive research experience in infectious disease and immunology, GUESS WHAT, your opinion does not matter. Worse yet, your opinion will claim lives. In the same way that I would not presume to tell a NASA rocket scientist how to successfully launch a space shuttle into space, individuals that do have extensive scientific knowledge should not presume to argue against vaccines. If I ever tell a NASA scientist to sit down, Im going to tell you how to launch this shuttle, I hope to God that the scientist tells me to shut the hell up. In the same way, I say to Jenny McCarthy and every other anti-vaccine crazy out there to shut the hell up.... YOU ARE GOING TO CAUSE A PANDEMIC AND DEATH. A general note... this does not mean that we should not always think critically. It doesnt mean that we shouldnt always challenge the status quo. The beauty of the scientific community, though, is that this is how that world operates. Brilliant scientists always challenge each other. I have been in the room at conferences when scientists vigorously argue (sometimes heatedly) over biomedical data and what it may or may not indicate. The beauty of the scientific process, however, is that it is CONSENSUS BUILDING. In other words as new data is uncovered and reported, the prevailing scientific THEORY, UNDERSTANDING, etc MUST COMPORT with the new data. If there is discord between new verified data and a prevailing theory, then there is an opportunity to rethink that theory. I got news for the anti-vaccine folks tho... The data is clear. Vaccines save lives. Period. End of story. This is not the opinion of one or two or three people. It is the finding of a global, peer reviewed, scientific community. One last time: Jenny McCarthy and other anti-vaccine crazies, shut the hell up. You are going to cause nothing but death and disease. Leave fixing your car to your car mechanic, and leave medicine and science to doctors and scientists. #endrant
