* I would rather die with my sister * I could hear mother ask the doctor if it was a boy. I could hear her cry everyday after the dutiful doctor informed her that we were twins and one of us was a girl. I wanted to scream out and plead her not to listen to what the prejudices said. I was hurt. But there was someone who was torn up and whose cries werent heard. My sister. I wanted to convey to our parents what my little sister felt when she heard the frightful advice people gave. She clung on to me in the shelter that we housed in, every time father cursed our mother for bearing a girl child. Our mother, the person who loved and nursed us for 6 months willingly told the doctor that she would like to kill us. Only because one of us was a girl. Mother didnt seem to retort against anything anyone said, but instead, agreed with them on all the jaundiced statements they made about my sister, who had done nothing but eagerly wait with me to explore the whole new world that we would have been entering in a few weeks. The next few days, she never fought with me for space or unknowingly sucked my thumb instead of hers, like she used to. Our little hearts that had just started beating would stop in a while. Besides, my sister was more concerned for me than herself. She felt that she was to be blamed for my death, for it was because of her, that mother wanted to get rid of the both of us. I did feel devastated. However, this pain was indeed a wonderful sensation. I did not want to belong to a family that killed an unborn baby for the sole purpose of it, being a girl. From inside the womb, I often heard people outside call out names of women and worship them and now they kill a baby with the fear of it growing up to be the same woman they worshipped. I do not know if it is fear, anxiety or disappointment but I do know one thing for sure....I am happier dying with my sister than being delightfully accepted by the same people who would have killed me, had I been of another gender.
