I write at a time when the forces of hatred run strong, when people across the United States are bracing themselves against a perceived “flood” of unwanted persons across the U.S.-Mexico border. Just this week, protestors in Murrieta, California made headlines for forcing a busload of immigrants away from their city. I write to to tell you that I’ve been in the midst of the very flood such anti-immigrant factions fear. I’ve witnessed a scale of human need that would seem capable of drowning us or overwhelming us. I’ve felt my ego and my coping mechanisms washed aside as I’ve scrambled to help amidst hundreds of volunteers seeking to do the same. Yet I’ve also been overwhelmed by the sheer outpouring of love from this community, and by an awareness of the abundance that is ours to share. I’ve been in the midst of the chaos, and I can tell you this—we have absolutely nothing to fear.
