I write this with a heavy heart. Tonight one of my best friends - TopicsExpress

I write this with a heavy heart. Tonight one of my best friends called me, her spirit shaken and fear apparent in her voice after experiencing racism first hand in NC. After a delayed flight, my friend was sent to a hotel in NC where the KKK was having a meeting. The front desk clerk, a participant, treated her with extreme disrespect to the point where she didn’t bother to get his name or even ask to speak to a manager out of fear of any type of negative reaction to an already less than desirable situation; her only concern was to make it out safely. What is even more bothersome than the fact that this has happened is that she didn’t feel it safe to call the police if the situation escalated and any of the participants, now gathered in front of the hotel, threatened her out of fear that they to wouldn’t protect her. My friend is an educated, articulate and well accomplished confident young woman! The fact that she is saying this to me completely hurts me to my soul! I cry and hurt for her as I type this. I would like to say that what has happened to my friend is shocking, that I couldn’t fathom this type of treatment especially in this day and age but I can’t say that. The fact is this type of treatment for certain individuals is becoming more and more acceptable and backed by a system that is supposedly suppose to protect everyone. It is clear now more than ever that the system is seriously flawed and we must continue to fight and have our voices heard. I feel that we are becoming “immune” to a situation that should be considered anything but. I refuse to become immune to injustice and I encourage you all to wake up! Wake up before it’s someone close to you that cant breathe.
