I wrote about this recently, the gay communities co-opting by rich white men. It began in the late 70s really, but as rich white (gay) men bought property, the goal was integration....and gay neighborhoods became among the most policed of any in any city.....(property rights trumps ideology...or rather IS ideology)....so gay rights became a PR campaign as this article nicely points out. NOT supporting bradley manning...low class, gender indeterminant, was not an image useful for integration into the status quo. Gay marriage...a bourgois institution rife with regressive factors became the kitsch sentimentalized trope du jour. SO.....you get *gay * characters on sit coms...and mission accomplished.
