I wrote the following poem over 20 years ago but it is still relevant today; the difference being, that now, I can sit back and watch my children see how they deal with my grandchildren in the same situation! The wheel goes round :) A Holy Show Oh God, forgive me for what I’ve done. I’ve been to Mass with my young son. I dressed him up in his Sunday best And took him off with all the rest. Now, “Seán,” I said, “we’re going to Mass Will you promise me you won’t be cross?” “I’ll be quiet, Ma, and I won’t shout I’ll be very good ‘til we come out.” Five minutes passed and he was grand, He sat quite still and held my hand. “Isn’t he great,” said a woman beside. I smiled on him and swelled with pride. She spoke too soon for the very next minute Seán decided he’d had his limit. He stood on the seat in front of me, “Where’s the Priest, Ma, let me see.” “Hush Dear,” I said, “don’t talk so loud, As the Priest don’t like to disturb the crowd.” On the Mass I tried to concentrate As he reached and grabbed the Offertory plate. He took a leaflet from the seat And eagerly began to eat And then again before I knew it He had it rolled into a flute. Dear Lord, I prayed, please tell your Priest To hurry this Eucharistic feast, For by now I was getting frantic As he was up to every antic. He hopped, he jumped, he wouldn’t sit down And all the congregation frowned. “What’s for dinner, Ma. Is there peas?” “Oh be quiet Seán, will you please.” At Communion time I took him with me, He pulled the hair of Fr. Sheehy. At last I heard “Now go in peace”. “Oh, Thank you Lord for this release.” At home I vowed that never, no more Would I take him with me inside a church door!
