I wrote this Poem Last night for a friend. It is about Sunflowers. Sunflowers; I lay there watching the tall ships with their white puffy sails floating by, the Sun Flowers and me. We watched them mingle together morphing into recognizable faces with beards and wavy hair. I feel their soft petals brushing against my cheek searching for the sun behind a dark cloudy sea. Teasing us with bursts of sunlight; creating dancing shadows of fluttering butterflies without a care. A gentle breeze rocks their leafy stems causing them to bend and far enough to kiss me on the face. I kiss them back my loving ones for they’ve stolen my heart as a thief would come during the night. I gently hold a stem so as to cause it no harm and lift a golden petal woven in like intricate lace. And there on a leaf a tiny caterpillar with little pads for feet inches its way across so soft and light. They delightfully pose for me while I sketch them with pad and pen, readying them for me to paint. I’ll paint their petals with cadmium yellow and add some extra white and burnt sienna for their bed. And their stems and leaves of course I’ll mix some shades of greens and a dab of umber ever so faint. I’ll use a mixture of blues to create needed shadows and rather than use black I’ll use Indigo instead. I watch the flighty butterfly’s, their colors so brilliant, like falling leaves as they settle and have their fill. I’ll paint the humming birds that dart about, searching for the nectar beneath the flowering seeds. I’ll paint them all in my sunflower fields as they dance to the rhythm of the breeze, never standing still. But in the midst of it all I’ll paint the golden flower in all of nature’s glory sustaining our basic needs.
