I wrote this a while ago and kept it to myself. But with whats happened recently here in the city of Memphis I thought Id post. Its long, but I hope someone can take something away from it. If we all ACTUALLY try, on every level... WE can change this and make this city better. But the only way thats going to happen is if everyone is willing to try, then try harder.. And never give up. Anyways, here it is... Memphis there is a character that rises somewhere from your streets You cant define it, but you can feel it You can feel it overflowing from the people that call you home From the people that will always declare... I’m from Memphis. Your streets of cracked cement and sometimes rubble… tell your story of struggle From buildings that were built 100 years ago Some of them 100 years later they still stand tall While others crumble. Your hurt… is our hurt Because we feel it every single day Driving down your roads that once were boulevards seems a crime It seems like half of you was left behind by father time You can turn a street Off one or another And things get better Infact sometimes they... look like they never stuttered. I have to ask you a question though Why have your mansions turned into clutter Into blight Into something other Not Memphis. We can see the past in you because its still there We can see the past in you… because we are you every single day. Around every single corner it was once there… and it still is and will be always compared. To the glittering lights of another city You were once that city called Memphis But you’re still in me.. Still in us Still the city of Memphis While the person writing this… Scott Madaus is not from here I weep with you and for you because when this started I wasn’t here. I’ll never forget you the city who changed my life From the streets, The lights, The job From the history you’ve given the world Hope... Hope to God they all one day will see the light You might be down But you’re never out Never forgotten Please understand we don’t care what they think about ya. The rest of the world see’s your promise From the people who come to see you From the people who end up staying Memphis you continue to change the world Without you saying anything. Its like your done talking. Actions can speak for themselves and louder than words What you did No one did this NO ONE will do this Ever again Wont let 55 or 68 die and just dwell. 2 single years don’t define you But the people who are here And the people who stay here continue to define you. Memphis you have no idea what you mean to the people who represent you They’ll always live, die and breath you Always say… There from Memphis. We see your streets And what grew from them How you changed the world Sliped on new shoes But we didn’t grow into em. While they… sometimes we…. might take you for granted They’ll never dismiss forget.. But always miss you And will always understand. When we see you down… we wish for a better day We wish we could change the planet Knowing always you carried a country and a world to a completely different place. You’re lights shine on a street called Beale But we remember when they didn’t Also when they did even brighter than they do today. It was the 1940’s and the 1950’s that you’ll always be compared Memphis we love you While it might be emotional Everything after that can not be compared. We want more for you Memphis than we can ever give But we’ll never leave you Never give up hope Because there’s to much at stake here… we want you to live. Memphis there are to many pictures and stories of you in your glory days. Pictures that will haunt some But in the end maybe we can all learn from this It will make you even stronger and will take you through until you’re glory days. This storys not done You’ll never be over Not some highlight in a book, or a movie Or some night, afternoon or morning news story. Memphis once again We’ll say it again Now, Forever & Always... We love you For the good The bad Never for the glory. STANDUP #MEMPHIS
