I wrote this in response to the link below on the death of Robin Williams. This may serve as an oratory topic for someone: the effect of social media on mourning. Does anyone else feel that theres something unsettling--perhaps even obscene--about a culture comfortable with initially reacting to the end of a mans life, one deserving of respect and dignity in light of apparent circumstances, with 140-character condolences and commentaries seemingly dashed off in milliseconds? See bottom CNN article. I read one post this afternoon that talked about a film marathon in honor of Williams. The author spoke as though Williams had passed months ago. One cable news commentator glossed over statements of the grieving widow and spoke of four movies that Williams has coming out later this year and what those films might contribute to his legacy. Doesnt this feel a bit rushed? What happens to us when we force grief and reflection to move at seemingly supersonic speed? How do our sensibilities suffer when thoughtful, delicate sentiment is reduced to a digital rectangle? Who mourns that quickly and in 140 characters or less?
