ICAO QUESTION: What is a belly landing and what can cause it? By: Mikes ICAO English for Aviation. A belly landing, sometimes referred to as a gear-up landing, is a situation when an aircraft lands without its gear extended and lands on its underside, or as is commonly known, its belly. A gear not extending can can caused by several reasons. Firstly, it could be by pilot error. The pilot may forget to lower the gear. This is almost impossible on larger aircraft due to automatic warnings and checklists, but has occurred on smaller aircraft. Secondly, the gear may not extend due to mechanical and hydraulic problems. The gear or gear doors may become stuck due to mechanical damage or a hydraulic leak may cause a gear not to extend, which was the cause of the LOT 767 belling landing in Warsaw in 2011. Clearer communication, safer skies!!! Cheers! Mike. Mikes ICAO English for Aviation. absoluteaviation.br (11)3253-4367 [email protected]
