ENVIRONMENTAL ETHOS Symbiosis Gathering is dedicated to creating a community culture based in self-reliance, reciprocity, and appreciation for all our relations. We look forward to expressing this ethic in every facet of festival experience, from the materials we use to our operations and actions. Some areas you will see these efforts in practice include. WATER SG13 will feature water refill stations to fill ‘er up! Stay hydrated! Water stations will be set up onsite for $1/ gallon or FREE with the purchase of a stainless steel Symbiosis water bottle. We do encourage all attendees to bring enough bulk water to keep themselves hydrated throughout the event. As part of our festival infrastructure, Symbiosis will be building and operating its own water system. All grey water which is not used at the event will be contained and packed out to avoid contaminating natural water supplies at Woodward Reservoir. All attendees must be prepared to do the same. Pack it in, Pack it DAY OF PEACE We intend to honor the International Day of Peace on Sept 21st through offering a ceremony to peace, with the intention of raising awareness among our attendees and within our community. FOOD VENDING All food sold at this event will be sourced from fresh, local or organic sources within 100 miles. There are a few farmers markets within 10 miles in Oakdale you can find on your way to the event as well to have delicious, healthy local food! PACK IN PACK OUT Symbiosis Gathering is dedicated to the ideal that we can commune with nature while also leaving a positive or, at the very least, neutral rather than any negative impact. Be prepared to pack out everything you bring to the festival, including your greywater. We support community-based education, so please support your neighbors in understanding the need for this, and in doing the same. WORKSHOPS Symbiosis Gathering is once again hosting an eclectic array of workshops, speakers, and installations focused on teaching important skills, techniques, and the knowledge of resources critical to planetary healing and awakening at the global, communal, and individual levels. Some of the content/ workshops/ speakers to highlight are: BeeHive Collective - Drawing the Big Picture of Resource Extraction Winona Hauter - Reforming the Foodopoly & Reclaiming Our Food System Laurel Sutherland- The Problem with Palm Oil & the Last Stand of the Orangutan Megan Szrom & Katie Grenell - Thinking Like a Mushroom Gerasimos Christoforatos - Closed-Loop Aquaponics With Applied Permaculture ANCESTRAL ARTS Our Ancestral Arts Village has a wonderful line up of primitive skills instruction including plant-based dyes, spinning & weaving techniques, fire starting, original fired bread making demos and teachings from the Horno, cob and mud brick building, cordage from native fibers, local plant medicines, origins and creations of select instruments, story telling, sacred birthing arts, accompanied by a few select amazing Turtle Island Elders to share in their vision and prayers! ART Recycle, borrow and turn trash to treasure. Our team is always looking for ways to provide what we need with responsible and creative solutions. This includes taking materials that most of the world considers trash and finding ways to use them in to fill our needs. Some examples include using shipping pallets to make furniture and tin cans to create art work! For SG13, installation artists will focus specifically on items that would otherwise go to the junk yard or landfill. ECO TOURS Everyday at 11am the Symbiosis sustainability manager will be leading eco tours of all the amazing environmental initiatives and projects this event has created. Students from the permaculture class will be showcasing their works and what they learned. We envision this as both a fun adventure and an open dialogue about ways you can take knowledge home with you to design your life more sustainably. Sustainability starts with you! COMMITMENT TO THE LAND The land is such an important aspect of our event….indeed it would not be possible without the land and water and all the living beings on the property. This year as part of our commitment to the environment that we are working within, we will be planting native trees help create a sanctuary for the bird population and more shade for the land. ARTIST HOSPITALITY A sustainable community is not only invested in building healthy relationships with surrounding natural resources; it also works to enhance and build authentic relationships between people. This involves being considerate of the safety of others and respecting local customs. POWER SUPPLY 55-45% of SG13 power grid is coming from renewable sources including use of Solar, Wind & Biodiesel powered generators wherever possible and available - both the Solar Saucer and Solamor Whisperwing Unit will be featured on site. The lighting is sourced from Solar-Wind, Biofuel and 100% is LED and Solar lighting to cut down the overall demand on distributed systems. 100% Solar lighting is provided to our Ready Set Camp rental tents. Be prepared to pack out everything you bring to the festival and to assist others in doing the same. As part of our on going commitment to the environment, Symbiosis is teaming up again with Sudbusters to bring back our reusable dish program for all food served at Symbiosis. We are proud to say that we washed 11,040 Plates, 9180 Cups, and 6400 forks during the event last year, reducing event waste by approximately 1,548 pounds! We also captured food waste for our composting. Thank you for participating in this program with us and lighten our load on the planet. HERE’S HOW IT WORKS = SYMBUCK FOR DISH: •When you buy food or drink from Vendors, there is a small fee added (as a deposit) to the purchase to cover the price of the cup, plate or bowl. •When you have finished your meal, return your dishware to the dish return station -in main food court and living room areas- in exchange for a Symbuck Chip. •Retain your Symbuck and present it at your next meal, and you will receive another dish, bowl or cup with your food you purchased. •Hold onto your Symbucks between purchases…this way the deposit you put down stays in the system and you do not have to put another deposit down. •Sunday afternoon and Monday bring your Symbucks or any dishes you have to the Living Room exchange area where your Symbuck will be exchanged for cash. ($1 for every dish/bowl, $2 for every cup). •Help us by promptly returning wares to keep the dishes in circulation (ie not leaving dishes at camp) Thanks! Easy Peasy. We are so inspired by this program and all of the ways it supports our commitment to planet earth. For more info, visit Sudbusters
