IDN65156 Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology New South Wales TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING for HEAVY RAINFALL, LARGE HAILSTONES and DAMAGING WIND For people in the Hunter, Metropolitan, Illawarra, South Coast, Snowy Mountains and parts of the Mid North Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, North West Slopes and Plains, South West Slopes, Riverina and Northern Tablelands Forecast Districts. Issued at 4:40 pm Friday, 9 January 2015. Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding over the next several hours in the Hunter, Metropolitan, Illawarra and parts of the Mid North Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, North West Slopes and Plains and Northern Tablelands districts. Locations which may be affected include Wollongong, Nowra, Bowral, Mudgee, Bathurst and Katoomba. Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and large hailstones over the next several hours in the South Coast, Snowy Mountains and parts of the Southern Tablelands districts. Locations which may be affected include Batemans Bay, Braidwood, Bega, Moruya Heads, Cooma and Bombala. Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and damaging winds over the next several hours in parts of the South West Slopes and Riverina districts. Locations which may be affected include Wagga Wagga, Tumbarumba, Griffith and Narrandera. 41mm of rain fell at Blacktown in 30 minutes between 4:05pm and 4:35pm. 37mm of rain fell at Merriwa [Mar-lea] in 30 minutes between 1:15 and 1:45pm. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Move your car under cover or away from trees. * Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. * Keep clear of fallen power lines. * Keep clear of creeks and storm drains. * Dont walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water. * If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue. * Unplug computers and appliances. * Avoid using the phone during the storm. * Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well. * For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES [NSW and ACT] on 132 500. The next warning is due to be issued by 7:40 pm.
