IDOLS, IMAGES, AND ICONS! OH MY! Have you ever wondered why God would make a commandment that demanded that man refrain from making any kind of symbol of worship? Me too. Every denomination religion, cult, and ism out there seems to have no problem breaking this commandment. Lets take a look at what God says. “You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. (Exodus 20:4-5) In Summary Dont create anything to worship. Worship the Creator! Dont worship through or to anything created. Worship the Creator! Dont bow down before the creation. Bow down before the Creator! The Creator says worship Him nothing else. Would you say that the Creator has made Himself clear? Remember Jesus told the woman at the well that God is a Spirit and those who worship must worship Him in Spirit and in Truth. (John 4:24) How can Spiritual worship be achieved through a physical means? It cant! How can you be using an IDOL, IMAGE, or ICON and worship God in Truth? You cant. It is impossible to worship in Truth when you are breaking Gods law in the attempt Remember that Paul said; Yes, they knew God, but they wouldnt worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles. So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies. They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen (Romans 1:21-25) Many people go every year to Ellis Island in New York to see the Statue of Liberty. She is supposed to stand as a symbol of our freedom and the hope that justice and truth will prevail. Funny how we always try to sum up ethereal ideas like truth and justice and limitless realities by our finite expressions of art and human ingenuity. If one must go to Ellis Island and stare at a statue to have an understanding of his freedom, how free is his freedom really? Wake up people! Destroy your Idols, Images, and Icons and bow before your Creator. This Creation is rapidly passing before your very eyes. OH MY!
