IEDs defused in Chhattisgarh ahead of Modi, Sonia rallies Raipur 07/Nov: Ahead of rallies by Congress president Sonia Gandhi and BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi in poll-bound Chhattisgarh’s Bastar later today, security forces on Thursday averted a possible landmine explosion on a vital road. The security forces defused two IEDs weighing 50 kgs in Dantewada area of the state. While conducting an area domination exercise, a joint squad of CRPF and state police detected two big Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) of 25 kg each kept in steel cases on the road between Dornapal and Jagargunda near Chintalnar in Sukma district. This is the same spot where Naxalites in 2010 had carried out the deadliest attack on security forces deployed for anti-Naxal operations as they killed 76 of them in a single ambush. Meanwhile, Thursday will see an interesting contest in poll-bound Chhattisgarh. Both Sonia Gandhi and Narendra Modi will be in Bastar today to address separate rallies – just a few kilometers apart. It will be for the first time in these elections that Sonia and Modi will have a direct face-off. While Sonia will address the rally in Kondagaon, Modi will speak to audiences at three places - Bastar, Kanker and Rajnandgaon. In the Chhattisgarh campaign, the Congress is trying to strike an emotional chord with the electorate by raking up the recent Bastar Naxal attack in which the party’s top state leadership was wiped out. Tomorrow, Rahul will be in Rajnandgaon and Durg to address rallies, while on Saturday Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will attend a public meeting in Raipur. From the BJP, senior leader LK Advani will be in the state on Saturday to address rallies in Kasdol, Bilaspur and Bhatapara. Meanwhile, the Intelligence Bureau has issued a security alert for Modi’s raly today, suggesting Maoists could target it. The BJP has already demanded PM-level security for Modi.
