IELTS (I-L) tests the language skills of Non-Native English speakers & IELTS comes in 2 flavors, General Training (GT) & Academic Training (AT): 1. GT: General Training 2. AT: Academic Training . GT is for work experience and/or immigration purposes. AT is for those seeking to attend universities and/or for specialized professions. . IELTS is a test that tests the non-English students in the following four language skills: A. Speaking B. Listening C. Writing D. Reading . A. Speaking . The speaking part of the IELTS is split into three sections from easier to harder difficulties. Each section is harder than the previous section. . The first speaking section asks students simple introduction questions about their name, age, hobbies, & other simple questions. . The second speaking section asks students to speak about a random topic for 1 - 2 minutes. The testers will choose a topic for the students. This means that the students need to be ready to talk about any of the topics before taking the IELTS. They are given one minute to prepare (in order to make a speech outline). Test takers will be graded on their content, variety of words (vocabulary), body language, confidence, & overall appeal, etc. . The third speaking section tests the students conversational skills. Testers interview the students concerning things (themes) related to the previous second speaking section. . B. Listening . The listening part consists of four sections. Each section increases in difficulties. The total time limit is 40 minutes long. . C. Writing . In the AT (Academic module), the writing part is divided into two tasks. The first tasks asks candidates to describe graphs, charts, etc, and the second task is to respond to an argument. . In GT version of the writing part, people are asked to write an explanation letter and an essay. . D. Reading . In AT, the reading part comprises of 3 sections with 3 texts which are normally followed by about 14 questions for a total of about 40 questions. . The GT version also has 3 sections but is shorter & up to 5 sections to read. . Some of my students study for IELTS. Some of my students are preparing for TOEIC or for the other tests. Some of my students are seeking to go abroad for work, study, or leisure. Some of them are already fluent. Regardless of these variables, it takes students months to prepare for these tests. . Students spend hours each day practising English in order to be prepared for these exams. Students need to give themselves enough time and enough utilities. There are several factors that determines your success for your career. One of the factors include your accent. You may get a better score on a test if you have an American accent. I say American because Im American. Other accents may apply as well. . If you want to get an American accent, you should listen to Americans via videos, audio files, radio, music, and especially via real-life interaction. Some of my students plan on taking some of these tests in a few months. . Students need to be patient enough in order to retain what they are learning. Learn one thing at a time. Revisit and review what you learn each day. Use different methods for learning. Words need to be very important. If they are not vital (fundamental), youll likely forget it. . IELTS measures the English language skills and levels of the students and the people who take those tests.
