The Kingdom of Great Britain resulted from the union of the kingdoms of England, Wales and Scotland in 1707. When five-sixths of Ireland seceded from the United Kingdom in 1922, the state was renamed the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Why Britain? The earliest known name for Great Britain is Albion from the Latin albus meaning white (referring to the white cliffs of Dover, i.e the first view of Britain from the continent).
