ILLEGAL WORKERS IN PARADISE I dont know if those Americans who are so self righteously outraged by the thought that a illegal alien may be stealing a plum job as an un-benefited dishwasher or field worker are aware that many Americans living aboard are taking away high paying jobs from citizens in third world countries. In our extensive travels in Central and South America, David and I consistently observed first hand that, in resort areas catering to tourists from the white countries, what are, by local standards, very high paying jobs in the hospitality and recreational industries are typically held by undocumented illegal white foreigners....This was especially the case in the island resorts on British Honduras......in spite of the fact that English is the native language. One night on Roatan, we had dinner with the white American manager of a high end restaurant who bluntly explained. Why, he asked, should he hire an islander who would demand the minimum hourly wage of $1.13 (U.S.) ....to whom he would be required to pay the equivalent of $1,500.00 in severance-- even if had to fire him or her for stealing....and to whom he must pay a 13th month of wages should the worker happen to stick around for a full 12 months? Why indeed, when he can have his pick of the illegal undocumented whites lining up who will gratefully and happily work for tips and commission only, to whom he is under no obligation and who he can terminate at will and without consequence? ....and how do these illegal workers stay in these countries longer than 90 days? Easily. There is profitable racket in fraudulent visas.
