ILLINOIS PAYING THE PRICE FOR IGNORING PENSION CRISIS (AP, 6/25) – Illinois is paying the price – in both cash and reputation – for years of ignored warnings about its pension crisis, the worst in the nation. So when Illinois tries to borrow money, it faces the problem of higher interest rates. HIGH COURT WON’T BLOCK SALE OF E15 (AP, 6/25) – The Supreme Court on Monday turned back a challenge to E15 motor fuel – a gasoline blend with 15 percent ethanol. The justices left in place a federal appeals court ruling that dismissed a challenge to government approval of the fuel mounted by the American Petroleum Institute, as well as several trade associations and some environmental groups. ADM UPS BID FOR GRAINCORP (Herald & Review, 6/25) – Archer Daniels Midland Co. is hoping the third time is the charm in a sweetened $3.4 billion deal in Australian dollars to buy GrainCorp. Decatur-based ADM sees the Australian company as a major prize because it owns a vast network of railroad cars, port facilities and grain storage and handling operations. STRONG PRICES, LIMITED SUPPLY BOOST INTEREST IN HIGH-QUALITY FARMLAND (Quincy Herald-Whig, 6/25) – High quality farmland remains in demand nationwide, and buyers are competing for top acres in Illinois and Missouri. Top farmland selling for $15,000 per acre across the region also helps boost prices for medium or lower-quality land. SENATE BACKS PLAN FOR BORDER (Wall Street Journal, 6/25) – The Senate on Monday backed a plan to toughen security along the U.S. border with Mexico, in a key test vote expected to help propel a sweeping overhaul of the nation’s immigration laws to a broad victory in the chamber later this week. The Senate voted 67-27 to advance the border-security plan. Monday’s vote showed growing momentum for the comprehensive immigration bill.
