#ILOVEphilippines #Workethics #Bourgeoisie We dont empower people here. Workers are not conditioned to work for passion, but out of necessity to survive because salaries are basically low. This has a drastic effect on ones relationship and value in the work force. There is also an inferiority complex, which is due to the hierarchy in Filipino society, a pyramidal class system. In Dumaguete for example, to be middle class does not necessarily equate to ones economy, but to ones educational attainment as well. God knows in the university where I teach right now, theres a lot of this going on. The sir maam salutation masks some of this. Take for example the janitor who used to work for both the Fine Arts Department and the Registrars Office. Hes not only the janitor, hes also the errand boy to anything and everything the people in the Registrars Office want him to do -from fixing their house on the weekend to getting something in the grocery --not part of his work description, but who cares, right? To be bourgeoisie here means to have some academic and enough cultural knowhow to be able to talk about global topics and culture from Mickey Mouse to George Orwell, the oldies talk of being cultured coz they listen to Ravel, Tschaikovsky or the ever-kitsch, Mozart. God knows, you never hear Sonnenberg or Messian coz their compositions are not melodic enough. Besides, money doesnt necessarily translate to taste, just look at the high rise building in the place; they look like urinals, all covered in tacky bathroom tiles. There is also the bahala na or okay ra na. attitude which is the lack of attention to detail. FRUSTRATING! Producing something here you have to constantly be on top of quality control. People pay for quality, and I dont mind paying more for excellent work but, how? How do you instill the idea of excellence in a mentality whose goal is only to fulfill basic needs?
