ILUKA LANDCARE GROUP CELEBRATES 20 YEARS WITH NPWS Today is International Volunteers Day and Clarence MP Chris Gulaptis announced one of Clarence Valley’s great local volunteers’ efforts is celebrating over two decades of selfless service to the community. The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and Iluka Landcare and Dune care group celebrated its 20 year partnership with a get-together last month (3/11) at Iluka Bluff attended by over 80 people. Mr Gulaptis said the day was a huge success with the community demonstrating the spirit that underpins this 20 year partnership. “It is so important to recognise the efforts of the volunteers such as the tireless members of the Iluka Landcare and Dunecare group and the Clarence Landcare,” Mr Gulaptis said. “Over this period many significant projects have been achieved working co-operatively together. “The list of achievements is impressive from restoring degraded landscapes of Iluka Bluff and surrounds, a Koala corridor along the Iluka Road, removing hectares of Lantana and Bitou Bush and playing a pivotal role in rescuing the Iluka N R rainforest to keep its World Heritage listing.” Ranger Steve Hodgson said community engagement is extremely important to NPWS, making an enormous contribution in conservation in areas special to local people. Past resident and Landcare member Margret Hinkler, who maintains financial support of the group was a welcome guest donating a bush regeneration book to the group as further inspiration. Co-ordinator of the group Kay Jeffery was most impressed by the support shown by the Iluka and Woombah community and by representatives of NPWS that have made this partnership what it is today. “Through Landcare many wonderful friendships are made caring for the natural world in which we live and leaving a better legacy for future generations. The endeavours of group members through much sweat and toil are something which they all can all be proud of,” Ms Jeffery said. “Support from Iluka business houses on the day of Iluka Hot bread, IGA and the Fruit and Vege shops was also much appreciated.” Images here: flickr/photos/48646673@N07/sets/72157638337151996/
