IM Gillan Bwalya from Zambia has just won the closely contested Zimbabwe Open which concluded at the Holiday Inn in Harare this morning. Gillan drew his final round match against Zimbabwe National Champion Emarald Mushore to secure a total of 7.5/9 and pocket a cool USD 2000 for his efforts. The strength of the tournament was evidenced by the fact that second place was then shared amongst three further IMs as IM Rodwell Makoto from Zimbabwe, IM Kelvin Chumfwa from Zambia and IM Providence Oatlhotse from Botswana all won their final round encounters to tie for second place on 7/9 and pocket USD 700 each. This overwhelming success of this tournament was further underlined by the fact that the Open section of the tournament featured almost 150 players. This is a credit to the dedication and hard work of Clive Mphambela, Charles Kuwaza and the entire team at the Zimbabwe Chess Federation. We look forward to working with the ZCF team in 2015 to build chess in the region even further.
