IMPORTANT NOTICE!! On Monday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it has received reports concerning jerky pet treat-related illnesses involving 3,600 dogs and 10 cats in the U.S. since 2007. Approximately 580 of those pets have died. FDA has conducted over 1,200 tests on jerky treats, but hasnt been able to determine the cause of the illnesses. Now FDA is asking veterinarians and pet owners to help with the investigation. Read the announcement here: fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/NewsEvents/CVMUpdates/ucm371450.htm Since June 2011, the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) has been keeping a log of suspected cases in Canada. To date, 63 cases have been reported to us by Canadian veterinarians in eight provinces. We have connected with the FDAs investigation team and offered to provide details on these suspected Canadian cases. If you have encountered a case that may be associated with the consumption of jerky products, please contact CVMA at [email protected] or 1-800-567-2862 extension 128. Let us know the date of the visit, the breed of the dog, the type of jerky treats it had been fed and any testing and/or treatment information that may be relevant to the case. Until the root cause of these illness complaints can be identified, CVMA will continue to maintain a log of reported incidents and communicate updated information to veterinarians so that you may caution and educate your clients on this issue.
