IMPROVE YOUR SELF CONFIDENCE Research says self confidence will account for 80% of your success in life. Your abilities, talents and skills may not find full expression if you lack required confidence. Nowadays, organisations are on the lookout for managers with courage and confidence, managers who know what to do and how to do things; managers who can fully express themselves, articulate, eloquent, smart and fast thinking, Managers with good judgement and the right attitude to risk. Inspiring, convincing with a get-up-and-go attitude. Today very many employees dread Monday mornings. Not just because the weekend is over but also because most team and departmental meetings hold on Monday mornings. These are serious meetings where tough submissions, analysis and decisions are made. In these meetings, the leaders are hard on their team members making inquiries and tough calls on performance, efficiencies, targets and ways out. As a brand manager, sales manager, production manager, procurement manager and the likes, your targets in volume, value, re-order and efficiencies are scrutinized. Assignments, deadlines, initiatives, projects and quality of performance, are reviewed and rated. Managers find themselves on the spot and on hot seats answering questions and queries from superiors and team leaders. Most of these meetings end with managers hardly smiling. Many managers leave the meetings at times upset, deflated, battered, discouraged and depressed, Some remorseful and really worried about their career future. For many managers, it is the Monday morning meetings that make Mondays dreadful. But do you realise these meetings can actually assist in accelerating your career growth? Instead of being anxious about these meetings, you can actually turn these meetings around to your advantage. The truth is many managers don’t like these meetings because they are ill prepared. They are hardly equipped in terms of information updates, numbers, issues and challenges; Latest developments, options, solution, next steps and ways out. Some are not even aware of developments on their own personal accountabilities much less the department or organisation as a whole. Once its Friday, many minds switch off work and they’re overwhelmed by the thrill, fun and excitement of the weekend. They are busy getting ready for the weekend and hence neglect effective wrap up of the week’s activity. Reports, final phone calls, sum ups and getting ready for the following week rarely happen. In fact many managers run helter skelter the following Monday morning getting updates and final figures a few minutes to such a serious meeting. Dear friend may I announce to you that appraisal does not really occur once a year. Your appraisal occurs during these Monday meetings as your boss and other team leaders take mental note of your ability, competence, confidence, ingenuity, and handle of your accountabilities. They rate you and classify you. Create career paths for you and determine your place in succession plans. It’s quite easy to shine and stand out in a team where the majority are not on top of their beat or so it seems. When your reports are up to date, clear, and exhaustive, your confidence is boosted and you present better than others who are not as prepared. And you appear to be consistently on top of your game. Dear friend if you want to hence forth look forward to Monday mornings, there are a few things you must begin to do: Number 0ne use your Fridays well. Use your Fridays to prepare your Monday morning reports. Get all the information you need from all stake holders and go after the facts. Prepare your report, envisage the likely questions and prepare a clever response. Study your report well especially the numbers. Check achievements against plan and actual against projected. Identify the reasons for shortfalls or otherwise and suggest ways to mitigate challenges. Study the report again and again such that you can almost present off hand. Also think through how your accountabilities may influence or affect the responsibilities of other team members and report it as well. If there are developments over the weekend make phone calls and get updates to fill in the gaps and have an up to date report. Secondly dress very well and look pretty good. Wear a very neat hair style, look clean and fresh. Go to bed early so as to rise early. Never arrive late, make sure you’re always punctual and be ready for the meeting way ahead of time. Thirdly go to the meeting with a positive attitude. See the opportunities and the good in everything, focus on the way out of challenges and contribute intelligently to topical issues. Wear a big smile; take corrections and criticism in good fate. Listen more and talk less. Rise above personal attacks, never react in anger, remain cool, calm and collected. Once you have a handle on this, you’re fast on your way to the top. Enjoy your day.
