IN 1945, THE NAG HAMMADI LIBRARY was discovered in Egypt. These uncovered Lost Gospels that preserve the secret teachings of Jesus. ... Gnostic is a Greek term that means “knowledge”, as in a “diagnosis”. ... Going again to Matthew 13, Jesus said: The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. ... The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field..., [and] the kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till it was all leavened (Matthew 13:11, 31, 33). Saint Irenaeus (c. 202 AD), an early church father and apologist, wrote of the Gnostic interpretation saying: The parable of the leaven, which the woman is described as having hid in three measures of meal, they declare to make manifest the three classes. For, according to their teaching, the woman represented Sophia; the three measures of meal, the three kinds of men—spiritual, animal, and material; while the leaven denoted the Savior Himself (Against Heresies 1:8:3). ... Rather than literal food, this is spiritual nourishment for the soul. In Proverbs and in Matthew 13, these are both just food for thought, as idiom goes. Sophia and Her Children In the original Greek translation of the Gospel of Luke, the name Sophia is found. Going to this Gospel, we read: Jesus began to speak…, “Sophia is proved right by all her children. … “You experts in the law…, your forefathers…killed the prophets, and you build their tombs. “Because of this also the Sophia of God said, I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’ … “Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge (gnosis). … “O Jerusalem…, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! See! Your house is left to you desolate” (Luke 7:24, 35, 11:46, 48-49, 13:35). In this passage, Jesus reveals highly Gnostic ideas, for he condemns the religious leaders..., saying that they had “taken away the key to Gnosis”, and what is this Gnosis? This is the “Knowledge” of Sophia.
