IN ANSWER TO ED MILIBANDS APPEAL TODAY TO STEM THE CURRENT SHARP RISE OF ANTI-SEMITISM IN BRITAIN: The recent war against Gaza may alone be blamed for the current upturn in anti-Semitism in the UK, myself not being amongst those, as I know the Israelis were just asking if the Gazaens had had enough yet, though a bit like a torturer. It was unacceptable that even one rocket should be fired into Israel by Hamas. The horror of that war however may deter people from so radically sympathising with the Holocaust which it has diminished and paled by comparison, although this was war, and in the Holocaust the Jews were prisoners of war, not the same thing. A country has to allow for war which is to kill the enemy to protect its own people. In the Holocaust it was because Hitler was at war and killing so many people he thought he would kill the Jews too, who were not fighting him and he was angry they were not fighting for him. I hope the Holocaust memory rises above the war with Gaza therefore and remains a permanent reminder of the worst tragedy in Jewish history and a warning about the choice of a countrys leader. Perhaps the war in Gaza is a too recent memory yet for many of us to revert to our former Holocaust sorrow. I myself can keep the Holocaust separate in my heart from Israels war with Gaza, without losing sight of the sufferings of the Palestinians under formidable attack by an enemy they still continued to anger with futile response when they had started the war with Israel in the first place. Israel must now appeal to you all to do the same and respond to the Holocaust and the Gaza war as separate entities both of which you can empathise with for their very different reasons so you can continue to love both Jews and Palestinians.
