IN OUR PUBLICATION TODAY 30/8/13 BEHOLD, CANAAN AT LAST BY OWILLI Jerry The much elusive election is finally here comrades. Light is now visible at the end of the optimally thorny tunnel. Two years of uncertainty and obstruction from forces not to be mentioned have kept us locked out of the opportunity to participate in the basic democratic right of voting as enshrined in the constitution. Yesterday however, an air of jubilation encompassed this institution as the administration at last gave in to the pressure to dissolve the 26th SGC and schedule an election date. Addressing students at the Students Centre yesterday, the DVC in charge of Students Affairs, Prof. Ogechi confirmed that the elections to vote in the 27th SGC will be held this semester. “We have done this memo in consultation with the Vice Chancellor and we are saying the following; the 27th Students Governing council elections will be held this semester on Friday the 13th of September,” said Prof. Ogechi in his speech. Tired of constant postponements of the elections, students marched to the dean’s office to show their discomfort at the administration’s stance of not to issuing any dates on the same before being sure of the graduation dates. In unison they publicly voiced their concerns to the dean, Prof. Ogechi accompanied by Mr. Ayieko sought to quell the flurry situation. The issuance of the elections date was however unsatisfactory to the angry students. They demanded that the 26th SGC be dissolved immediately, a demand that did not go down well with the DVC and the dean tentatively. Later on however, a memo was issued communicating the dissolution of the SGC much to the delight of the student fraternity. The move now engages the political gear in the institution with regard to campaigns in seek of constituting the next SGC. Aspiring candidates for the 27th SGC seats now have two weeks before the electorate go to the ballot to select the new leaders. The elections will help dispel the void that has been in place in the Student’s Governing Council due to the departure of the directors that completed their education last semester. The student fraternity looks forward to the long awaited elections. Preparations for the exercise now take center stage both in the students and the administration in order to ensure success come that day.
