INCIDENT SUMMARY: On January 26, 1986, Chicago Fire Department Lieutenant Edmond Coglianese of Engine 98 died in the line of duty during a fire in the Mark Twain Hotel at 111 W. Division Street. After helping to carry two elderly residents down a ladder from the hotel’s third floor, Coglianese re-entered the burning building to search for additional victims, but was trapped by the flames and smoke. Firefighters were eventually able to locate Coglianese, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Four other firefighters, one police officer, and several hotel residents were injured during the fire, and a female resident of the hotel who started the fire later pled guilty to arson and murder charges. A memorial to Coglianese, donated by Maurice Moore Memorials in Chicago Ridge, was later dedicated in a garden next to the Engine firehouse.
