INDIA INDIGO AIRLINES TO PAY RS. 10000 AS COMPENSATION TO TWO PASSENGERS WHOSE FLIGHT FROM AHMEDABAD TO CHANDIGARH CANCELLED AND PROVIDED ANOTHER OPTION TO REACH DELHI AND PASSENGERS HAVE TO GO TO CHANDIGARH BY BUS DESPITE PAYING AIRTICKET FOR AHMDEMAD TO CHANDIGARH 11th November 2013 District consumer disputes redressal forum, Chandigarh, has directed IndiGo Airlines to pay Rs. 10,000 as compensation for the inconvenience caused to two passengers owing to cancellation of flight from Chandigarh. Santosh Sharma of SAS Nagar and Shashi Kaushal of Hoshiarpur on October 21, 2012, got booked two e-tickets with IndiGo Airlines from Ahmedabad to Chandigarh for January 1, 2013. On December 31, 2012, the complainants enquired about the flight status with the airlines call centre and were informed that the flight had been cancelled and were requested to board an alternate flight under the same PNR number. Consequently, the complainants boarded an alternate flight from Ahmedabad to Delhi. However, the complainants were shocked to know that there were no arrangements for travelling from Delhi to Chandigarh. They had to travel via a Volvo bus to Chandigarh. The complainants alleged that the airlines charged same fare for alternate flight provided from Ahemdabad to Delhi as was charted for the main flight booked from Ahemdabad to Chandigarh, which was an unfair trade practice on their part. The complainants said they lodged a complaint with the airlines and were offered vouchers worth Rs. 2,000 which were valid till February 28, 2013, but as they did not have any immediate plan for air travelling, hence they were entitled to get refund and claimed that the airlines cannot force them to take vouchers only. IndiGo Airlines, in its reply, said the rescheduling of the Ahmedabad-Chandigarh flight to Ahmedabad-Delhi was necessitated due to bad weather at Chandigarh airport. The airlines said the complainants did not claim cancellation of their tickets and refund of fare, but chose to fly on the rescheduled flight from Ahmedabad to Delhi for which they were additionally compensated with travel e-vouchers. The forum, while disposing of the complaint through its November 11 order, held, “When the complainants had to travel by road from Delhi to Chandigarh at their own though their initial booking was from Ahmedabad to Chandigarh, they certainly had to face inconvenience, hardship and financial loss.”
