INDIAN EXPRESS DEC 31 Guru Gobind Singh’s birth anniversary: UT does a U-turn , cancels public holiday on Jan 5 - The Chandigarh Administration on Tuesday cancelled the public holiday it had declared for January 5 on account of the birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh. An official statement on Tuesday said that the day would be a working day in government offices, boards, corporations and other institutions under the Chandigarh Administration and also within the meaning of Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. Last week, Newsline had reported that no one in the city was celebrating the birth anniversary of the Tenth Guru on the day the administration had declared a public holiday for this purpose. While the Chandigarh Samuh Gurdwara Prabandhak Sangathan, which manages 45 gurdwaras, including the prominent ones in Sectors 8 and 34, decided to celebrate the festival on January 7, the only SGPC-run gurdwara in Sector 44 held the celebration on December 28.
