INDIAN PRIME MINISTER DR MANMOHAN SINGH RECEIVES HONORARY DOCTORATE FROM MGIMO The Prime Minister of India, and noted economist, Dr Manmohan Singh was conferred an Honorary Doctorate from MGIMO during a visit on October 21, 2013. Although a regular visitor to Moscow, including for September’s G20 Summit, the conferral ceremony and address was his first visit to MGIMO. He was welcomed by vice rector for studies Viktor Kirillov, who noted the long standing close ties between Russia and India and Dr Manmohan Singh’s role as a key architect of India’s rise as a major Asian power; both as ‘father’ of the economic reforms which had made this possible, as well as his international renown as a statesman. After an ovation from the assembled MGIMO students and academics, and the playing of the anthem «Gaudeamus», he handed the diploma and cloak of an Honorary Doctor to Dr Manmohan Singh. Dr Singh thanked MGIMO for what he considered a great honour, adding that it was especially significant coming from an institution which had such a distinguished history of contributing to global diplomacy. He said that the strength and durability of Indian-Russian relations reflected a long history of support between the two nations, with strong cultural academic political and artistic ties best exemplified by the correspondence between Leo Tolstoy and Mahatma Ghandi. He also spoke at length about the economic ties between Russia and India, with business relations between the two nations extending across the nuclear, heavy industry, power, defence industries, from light industry and agriculture, to space technologies, and which had increased to new levels in recent years. Dr Singh concluded by noting that while in Moscow he would meet with Russian president Vladimir Putin, and that he had high hopes for continued strong Russian-Indian relations. mgimo.ru/news/university/document242556.phtml
