INDIANA FALLEN OFFICER BLOOD DRIVE JULY 11 Frankfort, IN – July 8, 2013 – Clinton County residents are encouraged to give blood on Thursday, July 11 from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the American Legion (451 West Clinton Street) to help remember fallen police officers, recognize the dangers of the law enforcement profession and the need to donate blood. According to Frankfort Police Chief Troy Bacon, the Frankfort Police Department in conjunction with the Frankfort Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge #69 are partnering with the American Red Cross for the Indiana Fallen Officer Blood Drive on Thursday. “For the past several years we have participated in this important project founded by Janice Starnes whose husband, Sergeant Daniel Starnes was killed in the line of duty on July 10, 2001 during a traffic stop in Martinsville. “On behalf of our local officers, I share Janice’s message that this campaign helps to ensure the ultimate sacrifices of our fallen officers are never forgotten. I invite – and thank in advance – all those able and willing to donate blood to do so for this very worthy cause,” Bacon said. According to the American Red Cross, June and July are difficult months to collect blood due to so many families traveling during the summer. According to FOP President Scott Shoemaker, that situation won’t deter the local effort to solicit donations. “Last year every county in Indiana had at least one blood drive with a total of 5,000 units of blood collected. This year, the FOP is challenging Clinton County residents to exceed a total of 55 units of donated blood on July 11,” Shoemaker said. Each unit of blood helps three individuals by providing red blood cells, platelets and plasma. Blood donors need to be at least 17-years-old, in good health and weigh at least 110 pounds.
