INDIANAPOLIS - An Indianapolis Guardsman has died while serving in Afghanistan, the Indiana National Guard reported today. Staff Sgt. Randall R. Lane deployed in January as a member of the 1438th Transportation Company, stationed out of Franklin, Indiana. He served as a motor transport operator providing security for convoy operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. “Karen and I offer our prayers for comfort and strength to the wife and family of Staff Sgt. Randall Lane,” said Gov. Mike Pence in a press release. “I am grateful for men like Staff Sgt. Lane who sacrifice so that others may enjoy the blessings of liberty and freedom.” Lane was born in Neoga, Ill., on Oct. 24, 1969. He graduated from Neoga High school in 1988. Later that year, Lane enlisted in the Indiana Army National Guard, where he received specialized training at a motor transport operator in Ft. Lee, Va.
