INDIANAPOLIS STAR-NEWS STORY During college, I spent my summers working for the Star-News. I often worked the complaint desk, answering phone calls from customers who usually told me their paper was late that day. Id write up a delivery slip and a paper would be sent out to the customer. But the strangest call I ever got was from an elderly lady who wanted to cancel her subscription to the Star. Our conversation: Yes, maam. Are you moving away? No, Ive lived right here for fifty years and Ill live here until I die. Okay maam, is your paperboy late with the paper? Oh, no, hes always right on time. Does he throw the paper in the bushes or on the roof? My goodness no! He puts it right inside my door for me. Well, do you disagree with what you read in the paper? No, I really like the stories and the regular writers. Well, maam, I have to fill out this cancellation form for you, and one of the blanks is for why youre quitting. And in the saddest voice, she said: Well, I really hate to quit, but I have no choice. I just found out today that my little paperboy is a Catholic!
