INEC ensures terror victims vote in 2015 Abuja - The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is determined to ensure internally displaced persons (IDPs) participate in next years elections. A task force has been established to that effect. According to a press statement signed by Kayode Robert Idowu, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega, the latter has approved the commission It has a National Commissioner, Thelma Iremiren, with nine other members including the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states. Members of the task force include the Director, Electoral Operations, Kayode Oladimeji; Director, Legal Services, Barrister Ibrahim Bawa; Director, Voter Registry, Emmanuel Akem; Chief Technical Adviser to the Chairman, Professor Okechukwu Ibeanu; and Special Assistant to the Chairman, Mohammed Kuna. Also Read: 4 parties meet INEC’s deadline on candidates’ list Others are the REC of Borno State, Tukur Sa’ad; his counterpart for Adamawa State, Kassim Gaidam; the REC of Yobe State, Mallam Sadiq Abubakar Musa; and Director, Planning and Monitoring, Okechukwu Ndeche, who is also the Secretary. INEC added that the terms of reference of the task force are to examine the legal, political, security and administrative challenges in achieving IDP voting during the general election, evaluate the standards and recommendations emerging from conferences and workshops by international and local agencies on IDP voting, and determine their applicability to Nigeria for the 2015 General Election and Review the experiences of other jurisdictions in dealing with the challenges of IDP voting. They are also to evaluate the adequacy of existing electoral legal framework for resolving the challenges of IDP voting in the election, determine what the commission can do to ensure that IDPs are not disenfranchised. The terror perpetrated by the Boko Haram sect has resulted in the deaths of thousands and displaced scores more.
