INEC holds meeting on IDPs voting Tuesday The Independent National Electoral Commission, will on Tuesday hold a crucial meeting with stakeholders on modalities for conduct of the 2015 general elections at camps for Internally Displaced Persons in the North-East. The parley, which will be attended by representatives of the State Governments of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, is expected to get the robust buy-in and support of the stakeholders for the modalities INEC had articulated to ensure that IDPs exercise their franchise in next month’s elections. Other stakeholders expected at the meeting are members of the State Houses of Assembly from the three States; Speakers of the State Houses of Assembly from the three States; religious leaders, representatives of security agencies comprising the Army, Police, Department of State Services, Office of the National Security Adviser,Chief of Defence Staff and Civil Defence Corps, among others. The Commission had in November,2014 organized a Roundtable to discuss the fate of the IDPs and also set up a Task Force on how to get the IDPs to vote within the ambit of the extant laws. The terms of reference of the nine-member Task Force headed by National Commissioner, Thelma Iremiren, were to examine the legal, political, security and administrative challenges in achieving IDP voting during the 2015 election; evaluate the standards and recommendations emerging from conferences and workshops by international and local agencies on IDP voting, and determine their applicability to Nigeria for the election, among other issues.
