INFORMANTÉ informs: SADC elects chair of Political, Defence and security Cooperation Body Lilongwe - The 33rd Ordinary Summit of the Heads of State and Government of SADC, which ended on Sunday in Lilongwe, Malawi, elected the Namibian President, Hifikepunye Pohamba, for the post of chairperson of the Cooperation Body in the areas of Policy, Defence and Security of the a Organisation. According to the final communiqué, the meeting also elected Prime-minister of the Kingdom of Lesotho, Thomas Motsoahae Thabane, to the post of deputy chairman of the referred body. The summit was honoured with the participation of the chairperson of AU Commission Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma and secretaries-general of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), Sindiso Ndema Richard Sezibera. The meeting urged the member states to participate massively in the 20th general assembly of the World Tourism Organisation (WTO), which will jointly be organized by Zambia and Zimbabwe in 2013. The Heads of State and Government urged the member countries to streamline the implementation of measures aimed to boost the agricultural production, reduce the loss after the harvest and improve the food and nutritional situation in general, according to the Declaration of Dar-es Salaam on Agriculture and Food safety. During two days, the summit analysed various issues that affect the region. The meeting, in which the Angolan President José Eduardo dos Santos was represented by his Vice-president, Manuel Vicente, was attended by the Heads of State of Malawi, Joyce Banda (host), South Africa, Jacob Zuma, Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, Mozambique, Armando Guebuza, DR Congo, Joseph Kabila and Bostwana, Gen Seretse Khama. Mauritius, Namibia, Swaziland and Lesotho were represented by the respective Prime Minister, namely Naninchandra Ramgoolam, Marco Hausiki, Sibusiso Barnabas and Thomas Thabane. Zambia and Seychelles were represented by their Vice-presidents Guy Scott and Danny Faure, respectively. SADC groups Angola, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Malawi, Lesotho, Mauritius, Seychelles, Namibia, Swaziland and Madagascar (suspended).
