INHERENT VICE finds Joaquin Phoenix and director Paul Thomas Anderson shaking off the Kubrickian gloom of THE MASTER and reuniting for a druggie detective yarn that makes 1970s Los Angeles look like one giant conspiracy meant to keep a heartbroken P.I. from his hippie chick obsession. Any book by Thomas Pynchon has a difficult path to Hollywood adaptation, given the source materials heavy reliance on puns and plot digressions. Im not even sure that stoners will find enough in these 150 minutes to maintain their buzz if they dont work at decoding all the clever wordplay in the mumbled dialogue. This is a mystery so anti-establishment that any clue provided - be it from the chirpy tagalong narrator or an Ouja board - only further hampers our heros ability to identify enemies in the pervasive haze of hash and California sunshine. Anderson always makes cult films, but this one looks to be particularly small based on the few laughs and many walkouts at my screening. Still, I had a blast and RECOMMEND the adventurous huff these unusual vapors and see what it does to them. - Stu
