Apologies to anyone who turned up without booking, I did try to contact all likely performers via Facebook and email As I have said before, it is REALLY important you book through me, so I can let you know when things like this happen! We still have the Petersham Inn, 386 Parramatta rd, Petersham7:30-10:30 on Saturday nights. Please come along to that! Andrews report: Had a good night at the Petersham Inn on Sat. here is the report: Last week we had 6 different acts from Solo performer Brett Gedge with his backing tracks, through to a full band - Hawkestral. The new digital drumkit passed its audition with flying colours - The Count from Hawkestral played on them over my set (not always pretty on my part lol) and then he really gave them a workout with Hawkestral at the end. The benefit of Digital drums in these smaller venues was quite apparent as it was possible to mix the drums so that they were totally present in the room without dominating everything and driving the guitars up... and the punters out! Cathryn Dorahy and Jen played as a duo with a great balance of vocals and guitar. Peter Scully, president of the Songwriting Society of Australiaplayed a solo set to excellent reception as did Sharlene Charli Rainford. Hawkestral finished the night with an ever-building psychedelic rock set that had us entranced by the end of the evening - some really good sounds and rhythms in there guys. NEW VENUE - Harlequin Inn, Pyrmont, Sundays 3-6pm We are starting at Harlequin on Sunday 30th Nov and Stuart Jammin will host this first one Harlequin Inn, 152 Harris St (Cnr Harris & Union Sts), Pyrmont, 3-6pm CONTESTS Wednesdays at UTS Loft, Broadway - Songwriters and Performers Contest The winners from the Playoff for Round 3 on Wed 12 Nov were FINAL is on Wed 19 Nov, featuring Victoria Young, Alex Johnson, Gabriel Levin, Emma Wolthers, Danielle Lamb and Andrew & Dave. Wednesday at Olympic Hotel, 308 Moore Park Rd, Paddington Songwriters/Open Mic Shows started last Wednesday 12th November at the Olympic Hotel, 308 Moore Park Rd, Paddington. Heres Phils report: What a great night Wednesday night turned out to be. Firstly, huge thanks to all the performers who turned up to make the Inaugural Open Mic night at the Olympic Hotel in Paddington a massive success. Russell Neal played some of his wonderful Aussie Folk tunes assisted by Trish Lazarus on harmonies followed by Casey Bruce who totally wowed everybody despite not having played live for a year. Welcome back to the stage, man! Next up, we were all enthralled by a set by Yeri Hye who proved that some of the biggest voices can be produced by the most petite people. She was followed by DJ Disko Lips who captured the attention of the crowd with a fantastic selection of beat-boxed popular hits. The evening was rounded out by the talented Ray Falzon who, once again, showed what a magnificent showman he is and Ken DAram gave the crowd some smooth Bossa-Nova and Latin guitar work. My most profuse thanks go out to these guys for jamming towards the end of the evenings proceedings. Thanks should also go to friends and family of performers who showed up to give moral support and loud applause, to the bunch of fitness fanatics from JP Morgan who dropped into the hotel to undo all their hard work after training and to Jess, Iswor and Lauren for making us all feel welcome. I look forward to hosting many more Open Mics at the Olympic. Dont forget its happening every Wednesday night and if anybody wants to get up and play, either let me know or just turn up on the night with your instrument of choice. Book in (so I know to contact you in case of cancellation or other change) 2. Book in EARLY (so venues wont cancel due to lack of acts) 3. Keep your phone on so I can contact you (usually by text) 4. Send me your phone number (if you haven’t already) * If you sign up for a gig and then can’t make it PLEASE let me know (by text or phone if short notice), so I can either arrange a replacement or at least notify the host not to expect you and adjust playing times accordingly! * The host provides the PA and mics, stage manages and introduces the acts, he/she is in charge of the night, so follow his/her instructions. * SongsOnStage Songwriters and Performers nights: 6-7 acts doing 25-30 minute sets, turn up at the start of the night and let the host know you are there, he or she will then organize when you play. Originals preferred but covers allowed, these are performance opportunities, i.e. no pay. * SongsOnStage Contests: 6 contestants doing 20 minute sets, plus guest acts at the start and end. Turn up at the start of the night and let the host know you are there, he or she will then organize when you play. Originals preferred but covers allowed, no pay in the heats, big prizes in the Final. * SongsOnStage Concert nights 3-4 acts playing 40-50 minute sets, playing order determined in advance. Originals preferred but covers allowed, some pay to cover costs. * Tribute Nights 10-12 acts play 3-4 songs each, door charge, performers get a percentage * BandsOnStage nights 3 acts (usually full electric bands) playing 45 minute sets, playing order determined in advance. Originals preferred but covers allowed, some pay to cover costs. BandsOnStage gigs are specifically for full electric bands otherwise acts the above are mostly acoustic, but some venues allow bigger groups. I am always looking for opportunities for performers to earn the money they deserve! OTHER GREAT GIGS AND EVENTS COMING UP - (these are NOT gigs I am booking) COME TO THESE TO SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC!!! The Market hours are 10am-3pm, so one act can start at 10am, do 2 x 45mins sets, with a 30 min break in between finishing at 12noon, second act would commence 12.30 noon, do 2 x 45 min sets, with 30 mins break, finishing at 2.30pm-3pm. This is all flexible and they are happy to change things around on the day, if needs be. The acts need to bring their own PA, but the Festival could supply a gazebo if they dont have one. There is some money in this (to be negotiated depending on the acts) and you can also busk and sell CDs. Music-wise they are pretty open, but more on the chilled/acoustic side of things, family-friendly, all ages (Christmas/retro themed is OK too). Opportunity to Appear in a Video From Tim Jones: I am shortly going to start on my second professional video and need two middle aged, male friends to play the characters in the story. One is a nasty, vengeful, mentally, but not necessarily physically, small man. The other is the intended subject of his revenge. There are a series of attempts to assault the second man which all fail, with a slightly comic edge, and probably a scene where the assailant is assembling various nefarious plans of attack. Other shots will be of me performing my song Mosquito. Here is a link to my first video, released earlier this year, from which anyone who is interested can see that this will be a professional product: youtu.be/QUplikoBIiM. The two individuals will probably be needed for a weekend in inner Sydney - it wont be hard work, wont go on too long into the evening, will be a lot of fun, but will have some boring bits because having a professional producer means a lot of time spent setting up cameras, reshooting and perfecting shots etc.. Patience and co-operation are essential. It will probably be shot over a weekend at the end of October/start of November. Theres no cash it, but an appearance in a professional video for a couple of musician friends wont be a bad thing on the CV. For more about me, see timjones.au. Id be grateful if people could contact Russell on 0411 827 571 or songsonstage@gmail. Baby grand piano (+ seat) for sale. Baby grand piano (+ seat) for sale. This trio draws on a strong grounding in old-time and bluegrass music, extending their music to new compositions with far wider influences. These three lean lads are armed with some exciting music, which they recorded in Nashville, Tennessee, and have released as their debut EP. Andrew is a North Carolina native Double Bassist, and Yale School of Music masters graduate, who is immersed in the American Old-time and Bluegrass music scene. George is the 7th generation in a line of New Zealand fiddlers dating back to the first settlers. Hailing from Newcastle, Daniel Watkins is a strong vocalist, and a living encyclopedia of songs, which he masterfully flat-picks on his guitar . George and Dan are the back-to-back winners of the Australian Youth Bluegrass Scholarship (2012, 2013). georgejackson.au/george-andrew-daniel/ SUNDAY 23 NOV @ PETERSHAM BOWLO: CHRIS HENRY & THE HARDCORE GRASS (USA). 7PM. $25. APRA LIVE PERFORMANCE RETURNS - MONEY FOR YOU! On Tuesday 19th August, I sent out the list of everybodys gigs (according to my records) from 1 July 2013-30 June 2014 so you can prepare your APRA Live Performance Returns. If you did not receive an email with your details, please let me know! Note: I make no guarantee that what I send you will be 100% correct, so you will need to check it against your own records (get back to me if you find any discrepancies). I included instructions on how to enter the information - one person has already told me it looks complicated - but it will all make sense once you open the APRA web site apra-amcos.au, and it is worth the effort because you will get PAID for performing your songs (that person will make over$200). You just need to: 1. Join APRA now at apra-amcos.au, if you are not already a member (it’s FREE), and register your songs 2. Log on to apra-amcos.au and enter the performances I send you (plus any others you have done) 3. Enter how many times you have performed each song over the year. They will send you a cheque in November! If you have any problem entering these details contact Writer Services: [email protected] or phone them on the local number for your state listed on their web site. I don’t work for APRA so DO NOT CONTACT ME about how their web site works. TIP (THOUGHTS) OF THE WEEK Thoughts for the Day: Thought for the Day, “Music is forever; music should grow and mature with you, following you right on up until you die. ” ― Paul Simon Life isnt about waiting for the storm to pass, its about learning to dance in the rain - VIVIAN GREENE from https://facebook/pages/Couchys-Total-Fitness/275267719333876 These thoughts were borrowed from my brother, Terrys Facebook page https://facebook/pages/Blue-Taboo/641797352530240 - listen to Blue Taboos wonderful music! (thats MY tip) They were recently #1 in the Reverbnation Jazz charts for Sydney - reverbnation/bluetaboo And the Title of this weeks newsletter was suggested by Jehan https://facebook/jehanmusic This might be of interest: chn.ge/1skFGa8 a petition to Commit to an Australian Music Museum - its a great idea, though personally Id prefer money to go to supporting young and unknown musicians. Maybe thats where the profits from such a museum should go! Please feel free to send in your tips, practical ones or motivational ones, funny ones, whatever you think will finish the newsletter on a good note!!
