INSTALLMENT FIFTEEN The prayers finished and Sue (the hospital chaplain) left. I asked the nurse sitting at the foot of Annabelles bed what the next step was. What were their plans..did they have plans even..I was told an MRI was next, it was explained to us that they would have to come and prepare Annabelle for this and that perhaps now would be a good time for us to go and grab a hot drink. My heart twisted, how could I possibly think about leaving her. Lee took my hand tried to edge me away from her bed but I broke down, didnt, couldnt, wouldnt leave her. I told him straight, he felt the same but knew we had to let them get on with their job and that this was the perfect time to take a breather. The nurses came over explained it would be a good twenty minutes half hour to get her ready to go down then another hour, hour and a half having the actual scan there was nothing we could do we couldnt go with her and of course Annabelle herself had no idea whether we were there or not so with both Lees and the staffs encouragement we gave our little girl a tearful kiss goodbye and headed for the lift outside. Time goes so slow when your waiting and waiting for that lift was no exception.. It arrived and we got in, we were greeted by our swollen, red, crying faces looking back at us. Then I felt an arm round my shoulder, one of Annabelles doctors had entered the lift and said Go grab a strong cuppa and some fresh air, the scan will take a while and theres nothing you can do theyll take good care of her. She got out at the next floor and Lee and I stood staring into thin air till we reached the ground floor. There we exited. We grabbed a tea and coffee from BB and headed out to the main entrance. We walked outside took a deep inhale of the cold air..the first bit of fresh air wed had in a while. We took in the noises..the sirens, the traffic, the laughter, the tears, the Christmas music...we took in the sights..the sight of parents with their children, happy faces as their child was now better..I felt a pang of envy.. Before we knew it wed been standing outside for over half an hour, we were beginning to feel the cold. Lee was in a t shirt I was still in my hospital nightie from Medway. We had nothing with us nothing apart from our dear daughter. I started to shiver, uncontrollably, we had no clothes, no toiletries, no money no nothing..thats when it finally hit us. We were in shock.
