INTELLIGENCE 1 INTRO: When we talk of intelligence, we usually think in terms of the ability to solve problems, the ability to learn, mental quickness, imagination, judgment, attention reasoning and so on. All these traits and more may enter into the description of intelligence behavior. Intelligence is however, one of the most difficult concepts to define, and may psychologists disagree about a precise definition. One form of operational definition defines intelligence as that which is measured by intelligence tests. Different philosophers and psychologists however, disagree on the basic functions and activities of intelligence. Some of them reduce it into a power of thought and cognition, while others reduce it into a power of practice and action as well. Intelligence is manifested in three main aspects: practical, social and abstract. Practical intelligence is based on two main kinds of abilities: psychomotor skill, to be able to manipulate the machine or tool, such as the act of driving a car, and a mechanical comprehension, to understand how to use it. Social intelligence serves in the satisfaction of primary social needs, like maternal tendencies, courtship or mating. Intelligence is a tool that allows man to learn abstract signs and symbols, and to use them in solving problems. PROBLEMATIC: * Are there any valid tests for the measurement of intelligence? * Is intelligence hereditary? Is it affected by practice? * What does an intelligence test measure? * Is intelligence an exclusive property of man? Does it exist in animals? * What are the properties of the intelligent person? * What makes an individual more intelligent than other?
