INTERSTELLAR : For me, What really makes the movie good is not - TopicsExpress

INTERSTELLAR : For me, What really makes the movie good is not the story, not the four lines of Thomas poem, not the characters, not the underlying (or is it overlying ? ) sentimentality; but the stunning visuals and the cinematic experience. Its a visually resplendent cosmic adventure film , shot in 35 mm with an IMax camera mounted; hence stunning experience even in non-Imax cinemas though the experience might be better in an Imax cinema.. The lessons learned from this film are that Time is just Relative and that if there is one thing that transcends time and space, its Love(but the movie is not a romantic movie; no holding hands, no kisses, nothing. Remarkable. But of course theres all kinds of love; more of parent-offspring love; even love for humanity) . The film blends the cosmic and the intimate. with a touch of the surreal and the dreamlike, and yet it always feels grounded in its own deadly serious reality. It has used the possibility of Wormhole and Blackhole travel; which is currently incredible due to available scientific theories/lack of evidence . The film boasts spectacular images of our universe, alien worlds, and mankinds place in the whole realm of the cosmos. The special effects are truly terrific . Interstellar was originally developed as a film for Steven Spielberg, and the sentiments in the opening act would make one wonder if the entire film was done in a Nolan does Spielberg style. But it isnt. The science isnt probably meant to be 100% accurate; and I am not sure if it is; but much of it is definitely credible. Its a magnificent cinematic experience, if nothing else. one does not really need to know science to understand the movie as is thought; you can enter the cinema hall even if you have never read science since you left school ; the film has explained it well through the characters lines; if you can understand the main character Matthew McConaughey through his thick accent, that is . The ideas are real, sophisticated, and advanced. Its a movie that i enjoyed, with its gripping space, spectacle more worth than the story, which isnt really bad either. Quantum physics isnt going to be a popular conversation topic for your average moviegoer; and there is no real climax to the movie, but the plot is not particularly complex , unlike Inception. When were told about a ghost within minutes and its a movie about space travel; one tends to think- where is the movie headed at ? And then the ghost ends up speaking in Morse code and communicating, Stay, - thats Nolan hitting you over the head , ending in a conversation about how parents are ghosts for their children; linked with time-travel . It also makes us (especially atheists) think whether there can be a link between thought and feeling and & what we call quantum effects. Can Love be explained by Science? Quotes meant to impress: : 1. Love is the one thing that transcends time and space. 2. Were not meant to save the world. Were meant to leave it . 3. Murphy’s law doesn’t mean that something bad will happen. It means that whatever can happen, will happen. 4. When you become a parent, one thing becomes really clear. And that’s that you want to make sure your children feel safe. 5. We used to look up at the sky and wonder at our place in the stars, now we just look down and worry about our place in the dirt. 6. Do not go gentle into that good night; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. A few lines from Dylan Thomass poem; rather, vilanesque. It serves as an underlying theme to the struggles of the main character; few lines recited by both Prof Brandt and the devil Damon . Drawbacks : in my opinion, of course. 1. The main character Matthew McConaugheys hard-to-catch thick accent for many, including Westerners. He could have worked on it better for the wider international audience. Some non-UK European reviews suggest that they were happy the film had subtitles. I understood most of it after straining the ears; but I like to catch every single word in a movie; and easily; just like i wouldnt want to miss reading one single word from a book. But it doesnt take away much from the experience . 2. A lot of the dialogue isnt heard well. Much of the film is so loud that some people sleeping through the noise was impressive. The composer Hans Zimmer s organ music occasionally smother the words like lava. After audience reviews, some cinemas have put up notices that the sound effects (that drown dialogues) is intentional; explaining it isnt their faulty sound systems, as the audience might thought/are likely to think. . 3. The sentimentality and Hollywoodised convenience of the storytelling may prevent this mostly admirable film from achieving its potential in peoples reviews ; for others, its a welcome edge to the film. It certainly didnt spoil my experience. I actually liked the connection between emotion and science, a pretty novel idea in a movie, though not convincing. 4. The film still struggles to be really important; in my opinion; but let this not take away from this good film. 5. Some impossible/still to be proved/experimented science, like travel through blackhole, when scientists on Earth actually say that one can orbit the gargantua (blackhole) but not actually enter it or travel through it; one will probably just melt.) But after all, its a sci-fi movie, can be pardoned. On a good note, Christopher Nolan is still a fantastic Director. Oscar material ? Guess so. Maybe Best Director this time, hopefully for Nolan , who could certainly do with it . Watch it ? Certainly a good and interesting watch for the cinematic experience.
