A call for expressions of interest has been launched by the Ministry of Industry for the establishment of an agro-industrial complex in the Bertoua-Batouri interzone The Cameroonian government has launched a call for expressions of interest for the selection of a private investor for the creation and operation of a sugar agro-industrial complex in the East, in the interzone-Batouri Bertoua. The solicitation, which was signed on November 17 by the Minister of Mines, Industry and Technological Development (MINIMIDT), Emmanuel Bonde, was published in the public press on Thursday. The goal of the project is primarily to supplement the current deficit of the national sugar market per year and consider for future expansion to markets in the sub-region and beyond, said the Minister. Under accompanying measures, the Cameroonian government says it has delineated a site that will be assigned to the project, a minimum size of 32,000 hectares. Various other facilities included in the agreement proposed model will be awarded to the company or group of companies selected in accordance with the laws and regulations relating to incentives for private investment in the Republic of Cameroon, says Emmanuel Bonde. Interested investors can obtain the summary of the project study report to MINIMIDT and the project area map and the draft model agreement to be signed with the government. They can also visit, if they wish, the site retained and perform all the operations prior to their decision, also mentions the call for expressions of interest. Potential investors have 10 weeks of the 20 November, date of publication in the press for submission of applications. The Batouri Bertoua-agro-industrial complex should overcome the shortcomings of the current monopolist Sugar Corporation of Cameroon (Sosucam), a subsidiary of the French group Somdiaa, which operates sugar cane plantations and Nkoteng Mbandjock two locations in the department of Haute-Sanaga, in the Central region. Production of Sosucam officially 130,000 tons of sugar per year.
