IS PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN REALLY SANTA CLAUS ???; Now that the task of making Christmas toys has been taken from elves and outsourced to Chinese prison labors and Wall Marts serfs living in India and Bangladeshi, one wonders what Santa dose the other 364 days of the year. A reliable source informs me that a few years back when his duties began to diminish, thanks to American trade imbalance and N.A.F.T.A., he boldly embarked on a new part time job - acting. Yes, thats right, Santa is an actor and no less a one than our own beloved Philip Seymour Hoffman. Think about it, think about all of the roles he has entertained us with, if Santa were an actor can you imagine any one other than him that it might be? I know that line of reasoning might not bode well in a first year philosophy class, its on a much higher plain, just below telepathy. Ive proudly been able to extrapolate it over the years by dissecting all the screaming diatribes hurled against me by the women I love. There is a logic to the madness, you might say. His most recent movie I watched was a Christmas gift. The role of Daniel, played by Mark Ivanir, was particularly compelling. The character he portrayed drew me in. The music, Beethovans Op. 131 - a master piece of 7 movements played with out an intermission and surrounded by Op.130 and 132 - moved to the top of my Christmas wish list. Hint, hint J-9. One of the things I love about J-9 the most, apart from her high-logic critiques of me, is her obsession with wonderful music, the classical stuff. Each year like clock work, although she is completely tone deaf to Calvinistic theology, Thanksgiving marks the beginning of Messiah season, by Handel. If all of the killing done in the name of the baby-Jesus wasnt enough to convince me of His wonderful Mercy and existence, the Messiah would. It is perfect. Im a little embarrassed to omit that more than once it serving as melodic wafting elixir of love, so I wont. I got in a little trouble not viewing the men as villains in their separate peccadilloes. In the case of Daniel, I saw serendipity winning out over rigidity. In the case of Robert, player by Santa, I saw a caged bird escaping for a moment, only to quickly return with a heart filled with gratitude toward his jailor. Maybe Im projecting. In any event the movie was wonderful and Im excited as I seek to explore String Quartet Music.
