IS THIS THE GREATEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME ? Many think so. It was a radical departure from anything previously produced on a Motown label and was initially opposed by the lengendary Berry Gordy. Gaye shed his Gordy polished image and produced his epic work out of a depression flowing from remorse over letters from his brother in Vietnam and conditions at home. It has been called a concept album with 9 related songs flowing together to express a larger theme. Difficult and potentially non-marketable topics permeate the album. War, peace, addiction, endangered children, brutal poverty, faith and environmental degradation were not the typical stuff of Motown hits. Equally groundbreaking were the techniques and musical forms presented. It is a mix of jazz, funk, gospel, rock and classical music elements and orchestration. Innovative time signature changes, multi-layered lyrics, non pop friendly 7th chord voicings .....it was different. It is as relevant today as is was in 1971. If you have not heard it, I suggest you approach it with an open mind and a quite place to listen and take it all in. youtube/watch?v=VMFlupHV6Rs
