ISHI GLINSKY WIRE AND PAINT November 9, 2014-Jan. 4, 2015 Artist’s Reception November 8th 5:00-7:30 pm Call for more information! Artist Statement: For “Wire & Paint,” I will present two-dimensional oil paintings of Tohono O’odham style baskets from the early 20th century. Each canvas is an enlarged, flattened and skewed version of its traditional counterpart, making these paintings geometric studies of the infinite networks of color and fiber prevalent in the original sacred designs. In addition, I will create a reinterpretation of my Nation’s bailing wire baskets. Previously I found this material ideal, and created immersive installations that led to the sculptural baskets presented now, for “Wire & Paint.” I’ve learned to appreciate the beauty in its resourcefulness, malleability and tendency to rapidly age. Lastly, the focal point of my show is not necessarily hinged on the reinterpretation of the Tohono O’odham tradition but a fleeting memory I have of making my outfit for Men’s Traditional Intertribal dancing. The physical memory of this moment from many years ago is reflected in the techniques used to create this oversized sculptural piece. I believe the decision to use a material so delicate further symbolizes the precious existence of time, tradition and the souls from which these ideas and beliefs have originated. Artist Bio: Ishi Glinsky is a Native American artist born in the Southwest city of Tucson, Arizona. Currently, Glinsky resides and works in Los Angeles, CA. Whether it is through painting, installation or sculpture Glinsky’s work celebrates the historical significance of North American Native tribes, including his own, the Tohono O’odham Nation. Glinsky creates modern interpretations of ceremonial practices, cultural techniques or historical acts, which pay homage to events otherwise shrouded by time. #LAart #nativeamericanart @ishiglinsky Photos by Corelleo Marrero (baskets) and Masao Inoue
